The origin of a stool is lost in time although they are known to be one of the earliest forms of seat or wooden furniture. Stools are generally carved or decorated to carry deep symbolic meanings which are powerful vehicles of strong ties with the ancestors and hence with the spiritual world, as far as the state is concerned.

Traditionally, only the head of the household could own and take his place this stool. Women were prohibited from sitting on stools. Just by observing a man’s chair you can easily weave together a story about the owner and his position in the wider community. These chairs are surprisingly comfortable, used for rest, work and during traditional meetings.

Most Bamileke art (and the work of other kingdoms of the Cameroon Grasslands) relates to kings and important chiefs, who defined their power by the display of prestige objects during important ceremonies. Stools were among the most important of these objects. The motifs include lions, human figures and heads, spiders, lizards and other subjects plus abstract designs. The lion; cunning, fast, mobile and guardedly aggressive, signifies the ability to survive and is the most important royal icon, often even the king’s alter ego.
